Welcome to Speech and Debate Club!
Speech and Debate Club is open to all students from grades 9-12 at UCVTS and offers many opportunities to its members, including competitive debate, Model UN, and TEDx! There are many events that students can take part in at debate tournaments, such as Public Forum, Lincoln Douglass, Dramatic Interpretation, and more! Students can also take part in Model UN conferences, such as the YMCA MUN, which hosts over 2000 students from all over the nation. Our club also has its very own Tedx Youth Chapter, where students can create and present their very own Ted Talk!

Competitive Debate |
Model United Nations |
If you like debating on foreign policy, domestic policy, or any type of current issue, then competitive debate is definitely a good idea! UCVTS Speech and Debate is currently registered in the New Jersey Speech and Debate League, with competitions such as the Summit High School Holiday Classic, Ridge High School Invitational, and more, available to our members to compete in. Members can compete in events like Public Forum, Lincoln Douglass, Congress, or Policy Debate at these tournaments.
TEDx YouthGenerally, TEDx is a place in which "ideas worth sharing" are expressed to a large audience. We are looking for speakers who can talk about anything they find interesting, and are willing to put their ideas forward. Each speech will be around 6-8 minutes, and everyone that joins will be featured on the TEDx@UCVTS page on the TED website. Members interested in art, music, and technology can also help TEDx run smoothly on the day of our events!

Model United Nations is essentially a recreation of a real-life Model UN assembly, where students are assigned a country, do research on the country's views on a specific topic, and then discuss and brainstorm solutions to a specific problem with delegates from other countries. It's a great opportunity for anyone interested in debate, public speaking, and foreign policy. Our delegation is involved with several local Model UN conferences, and can also help delegates attend other ones, such as the YMCA Model UN in Pennsylvania and the YAG conference in New Jersey.
Why You Should JoinThere's a few reasons why Speech and Debate Club is one of the most popular clubs on campus, and here's why:
1. You get to meet a lot of new people from UCVTS and different schools across the Tri-State area! 2. Your public speaking skills WILL improve tremendously, as well as your research skills. 3. You get to explore and educate yourself on topics ranging from foreign policy to women's rights. 4. It's a lot of fun! |
